Fortnite FPS settings: a stable starting point

How to tune frame rate, display mode and background load without promising one universal preset.

Last verified: Updated: SEMI_DYNAMIC

Stable starting point

  1. Update the game and graphics driver before comparing settings.
  2. Change one setting at a time and record frame-time behaviour.
  3. Close overlays and background capture tools when diagnosing stutter.

Start with a stable baseline

On PC, verify the installation, update the graphics driver and test Fortnite’s Performance – Lower Graphical Fidelity mode only if your hardware is struggling. Use the display mode your system keeps stable, then cap FPS near a value it can sustain during fights rather than the highest lobby number. On console, prioritize the supported high-frame-rate mode and a display that actually accepts it.

What to change first

Change one variable at a time: rendering mode, 3D resolution, shadows, view distance, textures and effects. Lowering every option at once hides the cause and can make the image unnecessarily hard to read. Watch frame time and 1% lows, not only the counter. A stable 120 FPS is more useful than a fluctuating 240 FPS that stutters when building or fighting.

Troubleshoot before blaming settings

Close overlays, recording tools and large downloads. Check temperatures if performance degrades after playing for a while, and use the Epic launcher’s Verify option when files may be damaged. If the problem began after a patch, compare the official support and known-issue pages before replacing a working preset.
