Minecraft Java vs Bedrock: which edition should you choose?

What actually changes
Java Edition is the PC edition with the Java mod and server ecosystem. Bedrock Edition is the version built for Windows, consoles and mobile, with broader cross-device play. Java and Bedrock players cannot normally join the same world or Realm, so the edition used by friends is a practical requirement, not a cosmetic preference.
Choose by use case
Pick Java when PC mod loaders, Java-only servers or technical experimentation are the priority. Pick Bedrock when the group includes console or mobile players, when you need the same purchase across supported devices, or when controller play matters. Check the current store listing for your platform before buying; launcher names and bundled editions can change.
Decision check
Write down your platform, the platform of the people you will play with, the server type you need and whether you plan to mod. If any answer points to Java-only or Bedrock-only content, follow that constraint first. Do not assume that owning both editions automatically makes a Java server cross-play compatible.
